It is one of the oldest Croatian museums founded in 1893. with a goal to explore, collect, present and study the cultural remains of the Croats from the 7th to 15th century. It is located in one of the greenest urban areas of Split.
The Museum’s collection mostly exhibits various jewellery, weaponry, objects of everyday use and a large number of stone monuments which were part of early Croatian churches. The museum in total has about 20000 artifacts of which only 25% are displayed in a permanent exhibitions.

The collection of stone sculptures - more than 3000 pieces of stone sculptures, out of which most belong to the Early Middle Ages
The epigraphic collection - collection of epigraphic monuments from the 9th to 12th century with engraved names of Croatian rulers
The collection of jewelry - over 5,000 pieces of early Croatian jewellery, mostly earrings, rings, necklaces
Collection of tools,weapons, and related equipment - a rich collection of tools, weapons and related equipment from all periods most of found at grave sites
Numismatic collection - a collection of medieval, as well as some antique and Modern World coins
